Profession Paths in the Aces & Eights Game
The main source of character advancement in Aces & Eights is the profession path. Just like in the American West, people can switch their vocation often and quickly.
See the rope? That's the tool of a cowboy. You can be a cowboy and roundup cattle. Get bored with being a cowboy, then you could buy some survey equipment and plat some land. Grab that compass and be a scout. Get inspired by the lord, and the cowboy come surveyor scout is now a preaching giving sermons. Have the wrong faith and get into a shootout and start a career as a gunslinger.

In Aces & Eights, your character gets rewarded for following the path you them on. Follow the path and come back and you still get rewarded, though not for prior work. This encourages players to try the Turner thesis and recreate on the frontier each session.
